Cause and Effect (IM 705)

Keep your heart free from hate and your mind free from worries.

Give more, expect less.

Don’t take yourself serious.

Fill your life with love.

Do as you think you would be done by.

Change yourself not your work then work will seem to be different.

Don’t try everything at once

Practice being relaxed.

Get correct mental attitude.

Get closer with the friend with positive point of view.

Feed your mind with optimism about everything.

Discipline yourself.

Keep your work unto your schedule.

Cultivate happiness habit.

Everything is effect and a cause. Where there is effect, there is a cause. There is no such things as luck and chance. Whatever effect we want to have in our life, there is a cause. And it depends on us how we live each moment of our life…

Lessons from Cato (IM 704)

Marcus Porcius Cato the Younger, better known to the world simply as Cato. He was the senator who led the opposition to Julius Caesar in the last years of the Roman Republic, then killed himself rather than live under a dictator. In his own day, he was a soldier and an aristocrat, a senator and a Stoic.

History remembers Cato as Julius Caesar’s most formidable, infuriating enemy—at times the leader of the opposition, at times an opposition party unto himself.

George Washington is known to have a great respect for Cato. He even put on a play about Cato in the bitter winter at Valley Forge.
In doing nothing men learn to do evil. - Cato
Cato didn’t have Caesar’s military skill, or Cicero’s eloquence, or Pompey’s boyish good looks. But he had something even more formidable: a determination to hold himself, and those around him, to an insanely high standard. He asked to be measured by a standard higher than winning and losing in Roman politics, and that’s why he still matters long after ancient Rome went to ruins.

Why does he matter today? Because at a time of crisis and calamity in Rome, Cato’s mission was to live life on his own terms, even  when those terms put him at odds with everyone around him.  He reminds us that there’s a thin line between visionaries and fools–a lesson important to entrepreneurs, authors, creative, or really anyone doing work that goes against the grain.

The two important lessons from Cato are:

1. Use pain as a teacher:

Cato walked around ancient Rome in unusual clothing—with a goal of getting people to laugh at him. He learned to eat a poor man’s bread and live without luxuries—even though he was a Roman aristocrat. He would walk bareheaded in the rain, shoe-less in the cold.

He believed pain and difficulty could build endurance and self-control. Cato was drilling himself to become indifferent to all things outside the magic circle of the conscience. He could be ridiculed, starving, poor, cold, hot, sick—and none of it would matter. As the Stoic philosopher Epictetus taught: “Where is the good? In the will. Where is the evil? In the will.” Once a fight was broken up and he refused to accept a apology from an offender by replying: "I don't remember being hit".

2. Fear Nothing:

On an election day during a consequential race, Cato and his brother-in-law rose before dawn and set off for the polls. They were ambushed. The torchbearer at the head of Cato’s party collapsed with a groan—stabbed to death.

The assailants wounded each member of the party until all had fled but Cato and his brother-in-law held their ground. And Cato being wounded as blood poured from his arm. For Cato, the ambush was a reminder that if the front-runners were willing to perpetrate such crimes on the way to power, then one could only imagine what they would do once they arrived. It was all the more important that he stand in front of the Roman people, show off his wounds, and announce that he would stand for liberty as long as he had life in him.

Cato, meanwhile, walked unguarded and alone to the polls. Fear can only enter the mind with our consent, Cato had been taught. Choose not to be afraid, and fear simply vanishes.

Some of his Quotes are:
“By liberty I understand the power which every man has over his own actions and his right to enjoy the fruits of his labour, art and industry, as far as by it he hurts not the society or any member of it…” -Cato

Consider in silence whatever any one says: speech both conceals and reveals the inner soul of man. – Cato

Consider it the greatest of all virtues to restrain the tongue.

-Cato

I think the first wisdom is to restrain the tongue.

Stoicism (IM 703)

“If a man knows not which port he sails, no wind is favorable.” – Seneca

It is the way of life which involves training and practice for endurance of pain and hardship without even displaying the feelings. It helps us to regulate our thoughts and emotions.

Stoicism has been growing increasingly over past decade, with the suggestions from numbers of silicon valley entrepreneurs and other all around the world. Stoicism is an ancient Greek school of philosophy founded at Athens by Zeno of Citium. The school taught that virtue, the highest good, is based on knowledge; the wise live in harmony with the divine reason (also identified with Fate and Providence) that governs nature, and are indifferent to the vicissitudes of fortune and to pleasure and pain.

It includes four virtues which are: wisdom, justice, courage, and moderation. The practice of stoicism started in today's world from one of these books: Letters from a Stoic by Seneca, Meditations by Marcus Aurelius, The discourses of Epictetus, The Enchiridion, and On the shortness of life by Seneca.

Some of the powerful quotes from stoic philosophers are:

Remember: Matter. How tiny your share of it. Time. How brief and fleeting your allotment of it. Fate. How small a role you play in it.
- Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

“Waste no more time arguing what a good man should be. Be One.” – Marcus Aurelius

“It never ceases to amaze me: we all love ourselves more than other people, but care more about their opinion than our own.” – Marcus Aurelius

“Be tolerant with others and strict with yourself.” – Marcus Aurelius

Things stand outside of us, themselves by themselves, neither knowing anything of themselves nor expressing any judgment.
- Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

“He who fears death will never do anything worth of a man who is alive.” – Seneca

Let us meet with bravery whatever may befall us. Let us never feel a shudder at the thought of being wounded or of being made a prisoner, or of poverty or persecution.
- Seneca, Letters from a Stoic

“How long are you going to wait before you demand the best for yourself?” – Epictetus

“Don’t seek for everything to happen as you wish it would, but rather wish that everything happens as it actually will—then your life will flow well.” – Epictetus

“First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do.” – Epictetus

“Don’t explain your philosophy. Embody it.”- Epictetus

We should always be asking ourselves: “Is this something that is, or is not, in my control?”
- Epictetus, Enchiridion

It’s something like going on an ocean voyage. What can I do? Pick the captain, the boat, the date, and the best time to sail. But then a storm hits… What are my options? I do the only thing I am in a position to do, drown — but fearlessly, without bawling or crying out to God, because I know that what is born must also die.
- Epictetus, Discourses

“I begin to speak only when I’m certain what I’ll say isn’t better left unsaid.” – Cato

“What man actually needs is not a tensionless state but rather the striving and struggling for some goal worthy of him.” – Viktor Frankl

PPG signals (IM 702)

Photoplethysmogram(PPG) Signal can be used to monitor cardiovascular status. It is used to detect blood volume changes in the microvascular bed of tissue. Many wearables used to track pulse, blood pressure use the principle of PPG.

Many research indicate that PPG sensors are used to estimate the blood pressure. Research suggest that the morphology of waveform of ABP (Atrial Blood Pressure) is similar or is in-phase with the waveform of the PPG. The blood pressure can be measured using PPG sensors either through finger tips or ear lobes.

There is a great prospects in the future of medical devices that uses this technology.

Making things count (IM 701)

It's one of the most important lesson one can learn in the journey of life.

Making things count is like showing up for every opportunities and taking it as the building blocks for the future. It's like connecting the dots.

It's being optimistic. But we are not deluding ourselves by saying everything is going to be okay because it's not productive. It's making the most out of everything we encounter hoping to implement the learned (lessons) in the future.

What are we hungry for? (IM 700)

We all have a choice to make throughout our lives and behind every choices we make there is some hidden story. That story is our past experience or the external influence.

It is said that most people make an easy choices but it seems to me like we make a difficult choices most of the time. Our mind is destined for challenge. Even in the time of peace and happiness, our mind continuously seeks for unhappy moments and struggles.

And our mind forces us to follow the thoughts manufactured by him. It makes sense that human happiness more than anything else. But we keep letting our mind make those stuff that deters happiness.

What are we hungry for? Why we are always seeking happiness because we seek those stuff which we lack?

PS: It has been 700 days of blogging everyday in iminds and still many more to go...

Not knowing is the first step (IM 699)

Not knowing might be frustrating in times, but it’s the most important step towards wisdom. The essence of not knowing is to give direction towards knowledge and experience the downside of the victory.

It is very important to keep ourselves focused of breaking that state (not knowing state); and when we go out of that state, we get enough knowledge to move forward towards growth.

Blame and credit Vs Accurate and inaccurate (IM 698)

Most of us still blame and complain about the situation and we are still entitled for credit. Blaming and expecting a credit is a bad way to living. It's the lack of responsibility.

Get over "blame" and "credit", instead get on with "accurate" and "inaccurate". This makes a lot of sense and make our life happier and meaningful.

Pattern of mistakes (IM 697)

The path to success starts with knowing the weakness and mistakes and challenging them. The reflection of the mistakes is crucial to progress from it. I have been noticing that I have made a lot of mistakes. Here I have enlisted my painful mistakes that I've made in investment career till now.

I wrote down my patterns of mistakes to self-reflect and never repeat it again.

A. Pattern of Mistakes

Options have always been fatal to me ( 76.5% of my losses is from option). But Xilinx (90% of the time) and Raytheon Technologies (80% of the time) made upturn.
Betting of option/stock prior earning a day before didn't make positive result.
Keeping profit for long time (like in Inovio) and losing it
Over adding the capitals on downgrading stocks (mostly options) are hurtful.
Following the hype/crowd for quick money has been a bad strategy.
Lack of discipline. Panicking

B. Self-reflection and connecting the dots:

Stop trading option in Hype. (Xilinx and RTX see their trend -  enter only in a beautiful setup)
Earning risk? Never do earning options. Stocks not prior earning. Add only if it's in uptrend.
Take profit of the table. But What is the ROI? depends on the market. If overbought, then sell it.
Risk should be calculated. If it takes way to long to break-even, dump before losing more. Be defensive as well.
Don't follow the hype or crowd.
Follow the principles. Don't bet trapped by the hype or greed.

Writing down and staring at these challenges is always breathtaking but it's worth to take it for the long run.

Mistakes are the part of evolutionary process (IM 696)

If you don't mind being wrong on the way to being right you will learn a lot and increase your effectiveness. But if you can't tolerate your mistake or being wrong, you will make yourself and your associate miserable and create an environment where everyone is afraid of telling the truth.

The true gene of self evolutionary process is to acknowledge that being true is more important than being right.

Jeff Bezos once said, "You have to have willingness to repeatedly fail. If you don't have willingness to fail, you're going to have to be very careful not to invent."

Making mistake is the part of process but learning from them is the key...
