On Ego and the Larger Self
Do you care what other people think of you? Most of us would say, “Not really.” Then a friend leaves our message on read, and we spend the whole evening wondering what we did wrong. If we truly don't care, who is it that's so worried?
Carl Jung would say that what we call “I” is usually just the ego, the conscious part of us that plans and tells our story. It sits on top of a much larger psyche we rarely see. As Nietzsche put it, “We are unknown to ourselves.” The self we show the world is more like a carefully edited press release than an honest portrait. And the parts we leave out don't disappear. They keep shaping us from behind the scenes.
So maybe the real question isn't “Who am I?” but “How much of me have I actually met?” The image we carry of ourselves is only a sketch and not the whole picture. The wiser path is to hold our picture loosely and stay curious about the parts of you that you haven't met yet.
