Our inner self (IM#143)

The work we do is often a reflection of who we are inside. If we are careless in our actions, there is usually some carelessness within us. If we are late in everything, there is often disorder within us. If we are bored by everything, there may be emptiness or restlessness within us. What appears on the outside is rarely separate from what is happening within.

It is easy to blame circumstances, other people, or the environment for the way we perform. But many of our external results are shaped by our internal condition—our discipline, our attention, our attitude, and our standards. The outer life is often a mirror. The quality of our work, speech, habits, and responses reveals something about the quality of our inner world.

That is why the deeper task is not only to fix appearances, but to improve the self that produces them. The most ordinary work can become meaningful when it is done with care, seriousness, and presence. In the same way, even a great opportunity can be wasted by a disordered mind. The problem is not always the world around us. Very often, it begins within us.

If we want to change what shows up in our life, we must also examine what is happening inside. How we work is a reflection of how we are. To improve the outer life, we must refine the inner self first.
