Values, abilities and the skills (IM 806)
This sequence matters.
Values shape who a person is at the core. They reflect one’s character, culture, and the principles by which life is guided.
Abilities are the strengths a person develops through experience, character, and creative engagement with life. They influence what a person can handle, build, and express.
Skills are the practical competencies learned through repeated practice. They are important, but they are also the most teachable and replaceable of the three.
That is why values should come first, abilities second, and skills last. Skills can be learned. Abilities can be developed. But values determine how both are used. If values are weak, even strong abilities and polished skills can be misdirected. When values are sound, the rest can be built on stronger ground.
