Rules to win the game (IM#158)

To win the infinite game, you must follow a set of rules that allow you to endure. Life and business are not short sprints; they are marathons of persistence where the goal is not to beat an opponent but to stay in the arena.

While many people view the world through the lens of a zero-sum game, which is the belief that for one person to win, another must lose, true success comes from transcending that mindset. In a zero-sum game, resources are seen as finite and competition becomes a battle of extraction. But the infinite game is about expansion and contribution. When you operate with a clear internal structure, you move beyond the need to take from others and instead focus on building something that lasts.

These five rules act as the structural framework for your self-governance:

  • Define your core values. They are the boundaries of your character. Without these, you are at the mercy of every external pressure.
  • Derive principles from those values. Commit to them with absolute consistency. Principles are the rules you follow even when no one is watching.
  • Provide value beyond expectations. This is how you escape the zero-sum trap. By creating more value than you take, you ensure your place in the game is secure and your momentum is sustainable.
  • Adapt your position, not your core. Never compromise your values for a temporary advantage. You can change where you stand without changing who you are.
  • Evolve your tactics. Stay fluid. The world changes and your approach must change with it, but your foundation remains unshakable.

These rules act as a catalyst for longevity. In any long term endeavor, the winners are simply those who have the structural integrity to stay in the game the longest. By establishing these rules early, you ensure your execution remains steady even when the environment becomes unpredictable.
